The Yard
The Yard is a newly renovated arts space created in a historical building – a Victorian school in Manchester. The space is multi-functional, accommodating creative businesses, performance spaces, a recording studio and studios for designers, photographers and artists. The client wanted an industrial look to the space and has specified Novah for its lighting on several previous developments.
Lighting objectives
The client needed to ensure that good lux levels were achieved throughout the building, whilst ensuring that the lighting added to the creative atmosphere. Energy efficiency was also a crucial factor as this is a space that is supported by public funds and runs on a tight budget.
How did Novah approach this project?
Novah provided lighting designs and suggestions to the client and worked closely with them to ensure that the right products were specified.
Challenges
The client as keen to ensure that the lighting had a cool vibe and looked industrial without looking utilitarian. The venue has high ceilings and they wanted the light to be focused at the working plane and wanted to keep the actual ceiling dark. The client wanted to use reclaimed reflectors for the lighting to sit in so Novah had to ensure that it supplied a product which was compatible.
Novah solutions
Novah specified Solray Select for this project. This product is a linear batten that can be installed in a variety of ways and provide flexibility of output, even after installation. The Solray Select worked well with the reflectors and provided a strong, even light for the spaces.
Outcomes
The client is delighted with the lighting – it is providing a good quality of light for the artists and energy costs are being kept to a minimum.
